In September 2018 Leeds Girls Can began to support the Together Women Project in Leeds. Together Women Project are funded by multiple organisations including Police and Crime commissioner and Comic Relief.
They aim to move women out of crime and into positive futures by working with them to build resilience and develop strengths that enable them to move away from damaging lifestyles in safe women-only spaces. The Leeds Girls Can 6 week programme was created to support women from the project to become more active breaking down any barriers they face when taking part in physical activity, alongside supporting Together Women Projects aims. The 6 week programme included activities such as Boxing, exercise to music, swimming and Rock Climbing. Sessions allowed participants to try something new whilst having fun. Alongside getting active the women developed skills such as team work, communication skills and resilience. The sessions provided opportunities for the women to step out of their comfort zones. Following a climbing session one stated ‘I cannot believe what I have just done; I’m in such shock that I have actually just done that’. Others highlighted benefits like increased confidence, stress reduction and a better relationship with physical activity.
