Perinatal is the period of time when you become pregnant and up to a year after giving birth. You might also have heard of the following terms: Antenatal or pre-natal meaning 'before birth' Postnatal or postpartum meaning 'after birth'. Being physical active during both is key!
Prenatal (Antenatal) and Postnatal (Postpartum) Keep Active
Active Leeds aim is to nurture health for mother and baby every step of the way.
We provide a wide range of opportunities for you and your baby to be active whilst the bonding process is taking place.
When you are pregnant or a new mum it is an exciting time, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. We are here to try and support you through this transition.
Being physically active in pregnancy is considered safe and healthy with benefits for both you and your baby. By taking care of your physical health during pregnancy, it will better prepare you for the birth, and help your body adapt. There is some evidence that keeping active during pregnancy can help you to be less likely to experience problems in later pregnancy and labour.
It is okay and safe to continue with your normal daily physical activity or exercise for as long as you feel comfortable. If you are new to being active, start gently and listen to your body. Only do what feels comfortable.
The following info-graphics provide advice and ideas on being active in pregnancy and after childbirth: Physical activity for women after childbirth (birth to 12 months) (publishing.service.gov.uk)
Postnatal Women (Postpartum)
Depending on birth experience and recovery you can go back to exercise. Very gradually and build up intensity levels over time. If you experience any signs or symptoms of pelvic floor and/or abdominal wall dysfunction you should not resume activities and you should seek out the advice of a GP or midwife in the first instance.
